EV Certificates and Browser Trust Report 2026
· CSR.plus Team

- •The visible EV signal — the green address bar — has been removed by the major browser vendors, changing the EV value proposition.
- •EV issuance continues for industries where compliance or procurement policies require it.
- •Browser trust indicators now focus on HTTPS, HSTS and favicon consistency, not validation levels.
The end of the green address bar
Between 2019 and 2021 every major browser removed the green address bar and organization-name display for EV certificates. Browsers also dropped the distinction between DV and OV in the padlock panel. The only remaining EV signal is the organization name shown in the certificate details panel — a small, click-away affordance compared with the historical UI.
Where EV still matters
EV retains real value where it is written into policy: financial-sector compliance, enterprise procurement checklists, insurance requirements and phishing-mitigation programs. Some markets and industries treat EV as a de facto standard for payment pages despite the browser changes.
What trust signals browsers use now
Modern browsers surface three things: a valid HTTPS connection, a current HSTS policy (where present) and a consistent favicon. The practical recommendation for most sites is unchanged: DV with correct chains, HSTS, and solid operational security. For compliance-driven niches, EV is a procurement checkbox, not a security feature.
FAQ
Should I still buy an EV certificate?
Only if your industry or clients require it in writing. For general trust-building, the money is better spent on HSTS, monitoring and operational hygiene.
Does EV improve security?
The validation is stricter, but the TLS protection is identical to DV. EV does not make the connection more secure — it verifies organization identity.
