DV vs OV vs EV Certificates: What You Actually Pay For
  • •DV proves domain control in minutes for a few dollars — sufficient for the vast majority of websites.
  • •OV adds organization verification; EV adds full legal vetting and shows the organization name in the address bar.
  • •Encryption strength is identical at every level — you pay for identity, not security.

What each level actually verifies

DV (Domain Validation) verifies only that you control the domain — usually via email or an HTTP/DNS token. OV (Organization Validation) adds checks of your registered organization details against public records. EV (Extended Validation) requires the strictest vetting, including legal existence and operational authority, and is subject to CA/B Forum rules.

What you see in the browser

DV and OV certificates display the same padlock in modern browsers (OV used to show company names in some places; browsers have removed that distinction). EV shows the organization name next to the padlock in the address bar on desktop browsers — the only level with a visible identity signal.

The price gap and why it exists

A DV certificate costs $3–$300 per year depending on provider; OV roughly $30–$400; EV $75–$1100+. The gap reflects vetting labor, insurance and the CA’s liability structure, not cryptography. For internal tools, staging and most public sites, DV is technically indistinguishable under the hood.

When EV actually matters

EV matters when visible identity changes trust outcomes: financial services, large e-commerce, SaaS login pages, and phishing-sensitive audiences. For everything else, the money is usually better spent on monitoring, renewal hygiene and HSTS than on an EV badge.

FAQ

Does EV encrypt better than DV?

No. The TLS encryption, key strength and signature algorithms are the same. EV only adds identity verification that is displayed in the browser.

Will my site look different with OV or EV?

OV looks identical to DV in modern browsers. EV adds the organization name next to the padlock in the address bar on desktop.

Which level should a small business buy?

DV is the rational default. Upgrade to OV/EV only when your industry, compliance or customer trust model requires visible organization identity.
